Research
The implementation of the measures agreed on will be accompanied and supported by scientific investigations. For example, before the first actions are taken at the project site, selected groups of animals and plants will be carefully recorded in a standardized fashion. This will form the database which, with the help of repeat records gained from monitoring, will enable the effects of the construction and habitat restoration initiatives to be documented and evaluated.
This process concentrates on target species and groups of organisms whose occurrence and population density allow conclusions to be drawn about the condition of the habitat: fish and lampreys, invertebrates on the stream bed (macrozoobenthos), plants, beaver, and butterflies.
At the same time, investigation of the sediment will be undertaken to determine fine sediment levels in water bodies and to evaluate whether the stream bed intersticial system in its present quality is suitable as spawning grounds for salmonids (salmon and trout).
